Jordan Spieth who played alongside Woods in the opening two rounds said the atmosphere indeed reminded him of a major. To say the crowds were stacked 5-10 deep wasn’t hyperbole. Among those who braved the madness to see for himself was Hall of Fame outfielder Reggie Jackson.
When Woods was asked the obvious question of whether he felt he’s ready to win his 80th PGA Tour title he didn’t hesitate. “I think I’m not that far away from putting it together where I can win” he said.
No wonder the tears started flowing after Watson holed an eight-foot par putt at the 72nd hole for a 12-under 272 aggregate. Watson said he wondered if he’d ever win again. He even considered retirement. “I was close” he said. “My wife told me to quit whining and play golf. She’s a lot tougher than I am. I get a paper cut and I’m out for a week.”
